Welcome to Take Trips MES
Incarcerated youth of color can no longer be released just to go back into the system. This only serves to increase the recidivism rate. Take Trips MES is here to remove the barriers that prevent this population from seeking positive outcomes.
When you commit to healing the hurt, you commit to running towards a better life and environment.
Before any healing can be done youth of color must be encouraged to acknowledge what has left them hurt and broken.
Once the hurt and trauma has been acknowledged it must be discussed.
Youth that are serious about their healing, will be ready to do the work. Doing the work will allow them to see things differently.
No matter the skin tone, colored girl beauty is exquisite.
Sleep knowing that change starts with you; sleep woke.
Nothing happens right away, it’s all a process.
"Always pay it forward"
Barbara King is the founder and CEO of Take Trips MES. As an educator for over twenty years; ten years educating youth in secure and non-secure facilities, it was her mission to establish an organization where youth of color would be allowed to address their traumatic experiences by utilizing proper tools to heal from the damage of the outside world and the incarceration and detention system.
Tired of seeing this population increase the recidivism rate by consistently returning to the system, she began to inquire why this was happening. The answers were always the same, they were not receiving adequate aftercare services.
This was another mental and emotional wound they had to face. Barbara knew only too well the devastation wounds can cause if not attended to, she herself was mere steps away from being a part of the incarceration system. As a teenage mother from Harlem, New York on public assistance, socializing with dealers in Harlem during the late 80s, being stabbed, were all factors to how she could have became a statistic.
However, she had family and friends who provided her with a great foundation, especially an uncle who allowed her to be her and reach her potential. This foundation is what she has always relied on. Many youth of color don’t have a strong foundation and that is what Barbara wants to provide through Take Trips MES.
Barbara believes in paying it forward.
As a mother of two Kings in these trying times, I don't only fear for the juveniles and inmates I work with, I fear for my sons as well. When they step out into these streets I am never at ease until I hear their voices or see their smiling faces once again.
This is not the world I envisioned for them, but it's the world that has been built for me and them. As the founder of Take Trips MES, I want each young black male and female to return to their mothers every night safe and sound and not in a body bag.
Shamel King serves as Business Director for Take Trips MES. Shamel believes that everyone deserves a second chance. When Barbara approached him with the idea for Take Trips MES, Shamel would not allow her to complete her speech to him. He immediately interjected with “I am in!”. As a young Black man raised by a single mother, Shamel knows how hard it can be for youth of color and he has vowed to do his part to invest in youth of color and their futures.
Darnell Marable serves as Advocacy Director for Take Trips MES. Darnell is a young Black male just beginning his journey in life. Darnell is happy to be on the board of an organization that is making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged youth. He is quick to acknowledge that he has experienced a life of privilege but he knows that it is an honor to be a board member for Take Trips MES and do the necessary work to uplift individuals that resemble him.
" My name is Stella and I work as the Social Media Analyst for Take Trips MES. My job is to make sure everything is running smoothly on all social media platforms. I create content and network with other organizations. I decided to volunteer my time because it was getting frustrating not being able to do anything. I am a freshman student at Stuyvesant High School. Along with what I learn in school, I like to explore my options outside of school and be involved in the community. "
" My name is Nick Ingargiola and I am the Executive Technology Coach/Development Director of Take Trips MES. My job is to guide our tech team while also monitoring all decisions our company is making to ensure that we are moving in the right direction. I also help our CEO stay organized and scheduled to provide maximum productivity. I decided to join Take Trips MES because I fully support their mission and I want to dedicate my time toward creating positive change. "
" I am from Lagos, Nigeria. I am an accountant by profession and a digital marketer and online technology expert by passion. I joined Take Trips MES in January 2020 as a digital marketing apprentice for 3 months. After the completion of my apprenticeship in April, I decided to continue to help grow Take Trips MES because I saw the passion in Barbara to help the incarcerated youth of color in America. Although I am Nigerian, I am inspired by Take Trips MES and I want to see this dream become a reality. "
" I'm the web designer of Take Trips MES. I want to help Take Trips MES because I think the organization's purpose is really meaningful. I've heard stories about the lives of youth of color released from the incarceration and detention system, there are heartbreaking stories, and there are inspiring ones. I want to contribute my own energy to the mission of trying to ensure that more stories have a positive and inspiring new chapter. I work to create an engaging website that can help spread the mission and goals of Take Trips MES. "
" I graduated from Eckerd College in May 2020 and I am excited to delve into the nonprofit world. Through my studies in Women’s and Gender Studies, I was provided opportunities to question and analyze institutional structures and systems of power. I was shocked to realize how little I knew about the prison industry. I recognize that as a white person, I was formed around assumptions about prisons being necessary structures for the good of society. As I continue to learn more, I am beginning to see incarceration systems more clearly - as places of gendered and racialized oppression and unnecessary trauma. I feel lucky to have found Take Trips MES and I am inspired by their mission to reduce youth recidivism and heal people from cycles of trauma. I help Take Trips MES by producing and editing written content, including blogs and grant proposals. "
" I am studying Management and Leadership with a concentration in Human Resource Management at Bradley University. I will graduate in 2021 spring. I am learning that successful organizations require people who are willing to try experimental tactics to distinguish their business from others in the industry. I am excited to apply what I am learning to aid Take Trips MES. I work as the Human Resources Manager at Take Trips MES. My role includes tracking company hours across all levels of the organization, as well as financial information for invoices, spending, banking, and payroll. I help with the financial aspects of Take Trips MES to ensure that our primary mission is achieved - to break down barriers for incarcerated individuals so they may successfully reintegrate into society. I am inspired by Take Trips MES because I want to encourage others to become their best selves and to celebrate their strengths and victories. "
