Barbara is currently mentoring two individuals who are no longer apart of the detained system.
Danielle and Barbara are working on parental guidance and skills. Danielle is a 23 year old female of color with three children in which she does not have custody of. Danielle has to be consistently reminded to attend her scheduled group counseling, they also have two-hour discussions where she must discuss what it means to her to regain custody of her children. Danielle wants to be in a loving relationship but she must first understand what that looks like. Danielle is now working on her vision board where she will write text and post pictures to address these issues when we next meet.
Matthew is an 18 year old male of color who was recently released from the detained system. Matthew unfortunately is in a men’s shelter where they meet once a week to address him finding adequate employment. Matthew has a two year old daughter whom he is not allowed to see until he becomes more stable. They discussed ways in which Matthew can deal with these obstacles. They sat and outlined Matthew’s experiences to create a resume, Barbara has contacted several employers on his behalf, but due to COVID-19 many employers are not hiring, with this she has to encourage Matthew to continue going to see his counselor because these issues might make him go back to the gang life that got him in the detained system.

"Often we write our youth off because they make a mistake that gets their freedom taken from them,
but who are we to judge.
They have fears, fears that they are not comfortable sharing with everyone.
I am honored that I was the teacher you chose to share your fear."
